Mrs. Baker holds her B.A. degree from Catawba College and a Master’s degree in Education from Elon University. With certification in K through 9th grades, over the years Mrs. Baker has been called to teach 4th grade, Language Arts in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, and high school English in 9th, 10th, and 12th grades. She is completing her 16th year as our school’s drama instructor and spring musical director, and she is thrilled to apply her knowledge to developing a rigorous K-12 drama program to enhance the overall curriculum at TBS.
In addition, Mrs. Baker has directed and acted in amateur and professional theatre in the area for almost thirty years. Before becoming the drama teacher at Burlington Day School in 1999, Mrs. Baker ran an after-school drama program at South Graham Elementary, was hired as the assistant director of Teen-to-Teen Theatre, and soon thereafter was promoted to director of Teen-to-Teen Theatre, where she gained notoriety for the organization’s performances in area public schools. She directed many plays for Alamance Children’s Theatre and The Gallery Players, among other groups, and gained notoriety as a director in the area. Most recent directing credits are Shakespeare's The Tempest and Antony and Cleopatra at Studio 1. She has been heavily influenced by Fred Rubeck, Chairman of the Theatre Arts Department at Elon University, Richard Gang, also of Elon University, and John Walker, founder of Walkerdance, as well as the Stanislavsky approach and the work of Viola Spolin. She continues to maintain her standing in the community and hone her skills, by taking roles (when they do not interfere with the school year) at Studio 1, the Paramount Acting Co., at the Paramount Theater and at the famous, Barn Dinner Theater in Greensboro. Next summer she will perform in the Jones, Hope, Wooten comedy, Savannah Sipping Society at the Paramount Theater. Her hope is to nurture an appreciation and love for theatre and the performing arts in students and to utilize performing arts experiences to facilitate learning.
Mrs. Baker resides in Graham with her husband Joe, and she is proud of her kids, Margit (BDS alumna, class of 2007, and Elon School alumna, class of 2011), and Austin (BDS alumnus, class of 2012).
