After capturing a pair of state titles and having multiple other teams advance in state tournament competition, The Burlington School athletic program finished second in the standings for the Wells Fargo Cup following the 2018-19 school year.
This matches the school's best-ever finish in the standings as the Spartans also placed second in 2014-15. TBS placed seventh a year ago.
The Wells Fargo cup, presented and sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., recognizes overall excellence in high school athletics among NCISAA member institutions. As such, the cup has become the single most valued athletic achievement award in North Carolina.
Since 1985, the Wells Fargo Cup has been presented to the schools in each classification (1A and 2A) with the best overall interscholastic athletic programs. Beginning in 1999-2000, the Wells Fargo Cup has been awarded in three classifications (1A, 2A and 3A), with awards being issued to the school with the most combined points.
A school must finish in the top eight of a state championship tournament to earn points towards the Wells Fargo Cup standings.
During the 2018-19 school year, TBS won state titles in girls basketball and girls soccer, while the boys golf team finished third in the state. Spartan programs also appeared in state tournaments in girls tennis, boys soccer, volleyball, boys basketball and baseball. TBS athletes participated in state meets in cross country, swimming and track and field.
TBS (362.0 total points) finished second to Greenfield (405.0) and bested third-place Woodlawn (277.5) by nearly 100 points.
